Super Bowl Ads Review: Four Paws Down

Call me a cur-mudgeon, but I think that this year’s Super Bowl commercials featuring canines, well, went to the dogs. They were derivative at best, poorly conceived in the great midsection and downright cruel at their worst.

California’s Governor Proposes Cutting Shelter “Hold” Period in Half

To paraphrase Billy Beane, as played by Brad Pitt in the popular movie Moneyball, “There’s the one percent, and the 99 percent, then there’s fifty feet of crap, and then there’re shelter animals.”

That reality is stark in California, where Governor Jerry Brown has proposed gutting the state’s landmark Hayden Bill, a 1998 law that requires at least a six-day ‘hold’ period before impounded animals can be legally killed by shelter personnel.

Finding a Purpose for a Pup

An early morning call came in from a passerby who reported seeing a dog attacking sheep near a quiet country road. It was a gorgeous day, and I enjoyed the drive in spite of my anxiety to get there as soon as possible. I pulled up in front of a neat little white farmhouse surrounded by green fields. It was quiet; no one seemed to be home.

SPCA of Texas Opens New Shelter

Dallas animal shelters are going green. In 2007, the municipal Dallas Animal Services opened an eco-friendly shelter, and this month, the SPCA of Texas cut the ribbon on the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center. The formerly vacant warehouse has been transformed into a 72,000-square-foot full-service shelter, which includes an adoption area, spay/neuter clinic, veterinary care for sick and injured pets, and a humane education outreach center.
